Frequently Asked Questions
Who is this resource center written for?+
These articles are written for parents of premature infants, NICU bedside nurses, lactation consultants, residents, and neonatology fellows. We use plain language but cite the same staging criteria, imaging findings, and feeding-protocol evidence used in clinical practice.
Are these articles medical advice?+
No. This is educational content reviewed by our editorial team. Always defer to your neonatologist or pediatric surgeon for clinical decisions. If your baby has been diagnosed with NEC and was fed Similac Special Care or Enfamil Premature in the NICU, you may also have legal options — see our eligibility check.
How is necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) related to baby formula?+
Multiple peer-reviewed studies (including Lucas & Cole, Lancet 1990, and subsequent Cochrane reviews) show preterm infants fed cow's-milk-based formula have a 6–10x higher risk of NEC than those fed exclusively human milk. Manufacturers of Similac Special Care and Enfamil Premature are being sued for failing to warn families and clinicians of that risk.
